If you'd like to walk even a small part of the AT, it's easy to do while in/around Harpers Ferry. Uphill and downhill if making it part of a walk from the Harpers Ferry parking lot. Full review by Emily4023

It's in harpers ferry west virginia. You would keep walking past john brown's fort and head for the pedestrian bridge that takes you to the sign that says harper ferry carved into the tunnel in the mountain. Before you get to that pedestrian bridge. Trust me you can't miss it if you walk on the pedestrian bridge that is right beside the train tracks that go over the water

We spent one day in Harper's Ferry last year. The morning and early afternoon was for hiking and the afternoon was for seeing the historical sites. My brother did not think that was enough time to see the sites, but it was enough for my 76 year old mom and me! I would highly recommend the Maryland Heights Trail, which is just across the bridge from Harper's Ferry. It was an incredible view of Harper's Ferry at the top.

I don't live to far from Harpers Ferry so I either drive or ride my bike to the town. If you are riding you can park at the Brunswick, MD train station, about 7 miles away and ride north to Harpers Ferry. Harpers Ferry, WV is a very nice area to visit. You have the C&O canal, to hike and bike, you also have a number of small quaint shops to browse and but things, as well as shops associated with the Civil War. The confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers makes for a very peaceful time to sit and relax along the banks overlooking the rivers. At times throughout the year, re-enactment players appear to reenact the Civil War, which Harpers Ferry played a large role with John Brown, the Abolishonist. On the Maryland side of the Potomac River, there is Maryland Heights, about 200 feet above Harpers Ferry, which give you the hiker a breathtaking view of the entire area. If you arrive to the area early enough, you can park over there and make the hike up the trail. Bring water and snacks. The appalachian trail conservancy is in town to help the hikers as they cross through the unofficial midway point of the trail. Park in the train station parking lot, controlled by the National Park Service, and enjoy the day.
