I would choose a midweek day to visit and to go for castle opening. 10am. I think but double check.
How long should I give myself for the castle and gardens

About 3 hours for castle , plenty of guided tours which are great . They start about 10 then run hourly there's a board saying when and where . If you are Hha member free to get in .

Yeah there was a lot of people had picnics, there is no playground but there is a lot of open space to sit or play, and there is more space on your way up to the castle and they have got some swings build in the trees as you up the paths around the gardens.
