The hike is difficult in spots due to the steepness and rocks/tree roots, but much of the hike is not strenuous. There are no benches to sit on, if you need to rest you have to find a fallen tree trunk or rock to perch. Save plenty of water for the return trip and it’s mostly downhill on the way in, and uphill coming out. Take your time, wear good hiking shoes, pack a couple snacks, and lots of water.

We are in a Toyota Prius C so needless to say got about 20 ft into the potholes and decided against any further attempts. Does cave mountain Rd bypass the potholes entirely? Does the north entrance on hwy 5 have severe potholes like the entrance from the south? We were going to attempt a retry tomorrow on our way home to Louisiana.

To clarify.. we mistakenly went from hwy 16 to co Rd 3605 that took an extremely sharp turn into Madison 3500 or co Rd 404.. which then would have continued into co Rd 5 (cave mountain).. just hoping if we get on cave mt, though it's steep and gravel, it may be without the huge stone potholes .. they were scraping our undercarriage
