If you have your own car and love driving on highways then just take the car and drive to your destination. And you can visit other falls & tourist spots also very easily within a day. Have a night stay at Ranchi and then drive back home next morning. Alternatively there are several trains, shatabdi also from Howrah to Ranchi. Then take a cab to visit Dasam falls. By air also it is not expensive now-a-days. Kolkata to Ranchi, low cost airlines also available. But plan for many destinations to visit, only Dasam falls may not help much. It is not that big that you must be thinking. Visit Pahari Mandir at least.
Yes, I think my local guide took me through the Hinoo bridge, but she was driving and I was just enjoying the drive. As Prince Madhu says following G!Map might be best

Best bet would be to stay at Ranchi. You would get many decent hotels near Ranchi Railway station. You can visit the falls from here. You can cover Gautamdhara, Hundru and Dasham falls in a day. I would not suggest use of public transport. Hire a taxi and things will be in your control. And be on return journey before it gets dark. As I have mentioned earlier, the falls are really nice, but lack basic amenities. Not much of administration. Whatever is available is provided by locals.Dont get too close to waters in Dasham. Its too tempting and has cost many lives in past.
