"Some states require that you lay sand in the bottom of the trench when placing natural gas lines," says Bob Wren, training manager, Astec Underground. "It cushions the pipe to prevent damage.

The trench should be lined with a permeable membrane to prevent blockage by soil and debris before laying a perforated pipe inside. The trench can then be backfilled with gravel and covered over.
