A Republican lawmaker in Maine accused of choking his wife last month won re-election by a single vote after a Thursday recount.
Democratic Rep. Jared Golden won reelection to Congress through Maine’s ranked choice system on Friday. It’s the third time in four elections in the hotly contested district that Golden won after votes were retabulated because first choices failed to produce a majority for any candidate.
U.S. Rep. Jared Golden was declared the winner of the ranked-choice tabulation last Friday, but his challenger, Maine Rep. Austin Theriault, had formally requested a recount before state election officials announced ranked-choice counting would be needed to decide the winner.
Incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Golden won the ranked choice vote with 50.35% for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, which election officials determined Friday through a tabulation process that took four days.

According to the recount results, Lanigan received 2,478 votes while Kidder received 2,477 votes. Election officials said 424 ballots were still deemed to be blank following the recount.
