The James Webb Space Telescope just captured a gorgeous image of the Sombrero galaxy. This cluster now looks more like an archery target than any kind of hat.

The sharp resolution of Webb’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) also brings into focus details of the galaxy’s outer ring, providing insights into how the dust, an essential building block for astronomical objects in the Universe, is distributed. The galaxy’s outer ring shows intricate clumps in the infrared for the first time.

Since it came online in the summer of 2022, the James Webb Space Telescope has observed some of the most distant and ancient galaxies in the universe, as well as the planets in our own celestial backyard.

Astronomers used the James Webb Space Telescope to peer at the Sombrero Galaxy, a famous cosmic object in the constellation Virgo.
