Dec 4, 2006 · Anti-icing is putting down salt before it snows to prevent snow and ice from bonding to the surface. Anti-icing is putting salt on top of snow and ice. It will take more salt to do the job as an anti-icer than a de-icer. But there is the risk that an event will come as rain which will simply melt the salt and be a wasted expense.

Dec 16, 2012 · Ok so last year we had no snow, so I had about 60 bags of salt left over from a year before that. Now I have 60 hard as rock for the most part bags. I had them stacked on a skid and covered up but still most are ruined. So it struck me that there has to be a way to chop these up so I can use them and not just throw them away and buy more.

Dec 5, 2005 · You might want to try pelletized lime. Make sure it is dark in color. The lime will absorb heat from the sun and melt ice and snow. It's not as effective as salt or even fertil;izer but it is the most organic way to go and it'll give a little traction. Golf courses use it on their greens when they ice over. Good luck with it.

I can get regular stock salt for $3.50 per bag and magnesium chloride potassium chloride for $22.25 both are 50# bags. one person suggested just doubling the price of the bag but wanted more input.

Dec 23, 2004 · Urea is a nitrogen fertilizer 46-0-0. It will melt to +15 F. Potassium Chloride is also a fertilizer 0-0-62 and can be used as a ice melter. It melts to +12 F. Avalanche (Kissner) is +90% rock salt with 1-2% CMA added as the bait. The bait is to get you to pay good ice melter $$$'s for basically a bag of rock salt.

Dec 15, 2010 · Not because the rock salt will stop working, but more for the refreeze concern. Once the salt melts the snow, ambient temperature becomes an important factor, because it will freeze that nice melted snow into a nice shiny sheet of ice real quick if it's just NaCl brine.
Using hot water to melt snow rather than plow?
Feb 19, 2011 · It would cost way more money to melt the snow with hot water then it would to plow the lot. First you have to consider the equipment it would take. I am guessing a 3 hour lot is close to 3 acres. To melt 2 inches off of 3 acres would take a tremendous amount of water, so you would have to have a tanker truck of some sort.

Can someone here give me a rough idea and I mean very rough as to how much of an area a 50lb bag of salt/ice melt goes? It will be put down not light but not heavy either.
