Feb 20, 2023 · The Animal Diversity Web is an online database and encyclopedia of animal natural history, built through contributions from students, photographers, and many others. It is a rich and flexible resource designed both as an encyclopedia for exploring biodiversity and for use in formal, inquiry-based education.
ADW: Mammalia: INFORMATION
Diversity. The Class Mammalia includes about 5000 species placed in 26 orders. Systematists do not yet agree on the exact number or on how some orders and families are related to others. The Animal Diversity Web generally follows the arrangement used by Wilson and Reeder (2005).

For the sake of convenience, the Animal Diversity Web follows the system outlined in Hickman and Roberts (1994). Education Resources - ADW
The Animal Diversity Web has been used by educators globally to support the learning experiences of their students in organismal biology courses, such as zoology, evolution, behavior, and ecology. One way students engage with ADW is through authorship of species accounts as part of their coursework.

The staff of the Animal Diversity Web are employed through the Museum of Zoology at the University of Michigan. Current team members: Dr. Phil Myers, Ph.D. Director and founder of the Animal Diversity Web. Curator of Mammals in the Museum of Zoology, and Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. ADW: Taxidea taxus: INFORMATION
A terrestrial biome found in temperate latitudes (>23.5° N or S latitude). Vegetation is made up mostly of grasses, the height and species diversity of which depend largely on the amount of moisture available. Fire and grazing are important in the long-term maintenance of grasslands.

ADW: Odobenus rosmarus: INFORMATION
This animal is known for their massive tusks, which are really just enlarged canine teeth. These tusks can break through 20 cm of ice. They also assist walruses in climbing out of the water and onto the ice.
