From this background, let us seek to learn how Peter uses Joel 2:28-32 to explain the meaning of the miraculous events that have just occurred in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost. Peter said it in a very few words: “ This is what was spoken about through the prophet Joel” (Acts 2:16).

The passage which Peter quoted and interpreted is found in Joel 2:28-32, and it declared, many centuries before Pentecost, that God would one day pour out His Spirit on all flesh. The crowd in amazement asked, “What meaneth this?”

It is "Peter standing up with the eleven," (Acts 2:14). When the people on the day of Pentecost heard the words of the men speaking, this is what they said, "Now when they heard this they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do?" (Acts 2:37).

Peter and the other apostles will be able to preach to large crowds of Jews gathered to worship God in the Temple (Acts 2-3). What is there in Peter’s sermon that makes some use of this Pentecost imagery? Why did God choose Pentecost for the outpouring of the Spirit?
