Sep 3, 2024 · I normally find some old bearing races that are the diameter of the seal, stack them past the end of the pinion, then use a bushing driver/something flat so that when you are hitting it with the hammer, force is applied evenly across the seal. Another tip, use some grease or vaseline and pack it into the back of the seal.

Jul 17, 2005 · The problem with replacing the seal is that underneath it is a crush collar that compresses when the pinion nut is tightened down. When you initially set up the gears, you squash down the collar until you get the proper preload on the pinion bearings. (this usually takes a breaker bar with a cheater pipe).

Apr 30, 2017 · Hello Dave, You are correct, the Timken 8460N is the truck 12 bolt pinion seal. I looked up the dimensions for the 8460N, and the depth of this seal is .594. That is the same depth (from bottom of metal portion of the seal to the top/outer surface of the flange) as the GM 12 Bolt truck seal that I have.

Nov 11, 2020 · I would blue threadlock the pinion nut as well as the driveshaft to yoke bolts. Torque specs you'll have to look up on Google. Make sure you look at the surface of the yoke that rises against the seal. If you feel any imperfections at all, however slight, look for a seal saver and sleeve the yoke before you go back together or it'll leak again.

Mar 14, 2020 · I have the 12 bolt truck pinion seal and it sits deeper. I had a 1/8" spacer made to fit under the seals flange so it will seal the yoke properly. Too bad I didn't know about that Ratech seal before. Anyway I've been hesitant to pull the yoke because I dont want to screw up the preload on the pinion bearing.

Jan 28, 2001 · Put a little RTV around the outside of the seal before you drive it in, and put some grease on the seal lip before you put the yoke back in. Use some red Lock Tight on the threads of the pinion and the nut before you put the nut back on. You do not want the nut to back off later, and they do back off sometimes.
